Herve’s obsession with Sei Ashina is complicated by his relationship with his wife, Helene (Keira Knightley). In order to get the silkworm eggs, Herve must travel to several countries. His liaison with Hara Jubei’s concubine leaves him feeling guilty.
When Herve is returned to France, he starts to have feelings for his wife. But he is still obsessed with Sei Ashina.
“Silk” is a beautiful, dark film. Alain Dostie’s location photography is vibrant and arresting. At times, the movie looks like a travelogue.
However, the film is flawed. Some critics have said that the screenplay is clunky and ineffective. And the score by Ryuichi Sakamoto has an obtrusive, uncanny quality. There are also a few loose ends at the end.
