Jeans have been in vogue for so long and still is in the world of today. Everyone wears them and everyone owns at least a pair of jean trousers or jackets in their wardrobe. The most popular colours of jeans are black and blue. Quality jeans feel so comfortable to wear, especially along with other outfits and also, their durability is completely unmatched. Hence, the reason they are extremely popular all around the world.
So, Why Do My Black Jeans Smell Weird? Okay, it is possible for jeans to have weird smells, and this does not have to do with the colour. Most times, the quality of your jeans might be the problem. And more often than normal, the maintenance of your jeans could probably be the issue.
But do not fret, sometimes, new jeans come with a certain smell; but if yours isn’t new, there are a lot of possibilities you need to consider because you need to be sure if the smell is normal to come from your old jeans or not.
Jeans emit different kinds of weird smell, but the most common and frequent smell is sulphur. Now, sulphur is a chemical substance with a really concentrated and pungent odour.
There are a number of varieties of chemicals used for dyeing jeans, and this, if not done properly or if done excessively, there is a tendency for the sulphuric odour to stay on the particular jeans.
Some chemicals like hydroxy-polycarboxylic acids, aminomethyl phosphonate, and sodium polyphosphates, and reducing agents such as sodium bisulfite and hydrosulfite are used in the production of jeans.
To be honest, I literally have no idea what those chemicals are scientifically, but they are all applied to jeans and are hazardous to our health. Which is why we must get them out for our safety and those around us.
Manufacturers dye fabrics to get the desired colours, and sometimes the odour is not removed in the process. Jeans, especially black ones, may still smell strongly of dye when you purchase them.

Yes, you should be. This is not a matter of toxicity of the chemicals as I mentioned earlier, it is about your comfort and the comfort of those around you. No one would like to be close to someone that smells weird, right? Exactly. The way one smells goes a long way in building the individual’s confidence as well.
When black jeans smell weird, does it mean that they are outdated and need to be disposed of and replaced?
Absolutely not. Do not dispose of your black jeans because they smell weird, the smell only need to be corrected. Even though we all know that jeans do not cost a fortune and you could actually own as many as you would like, it still will save your funds if you could correct that particular smell problem.
Also, weird smells do not mean your pair of jean trousers or jackets are old enough to be changed or outdated, they probably are not good quality products.

What other factors cause black jeans to smell weird?
Your maintenance! You need to know that jean products are way different from other clothes you wear. Their maintenance is a little diverse.
How often do you wash them? How often do you wear them before washing them? How rigorously do you wash them? Now, I shall answer these questions one after the other.
Generally, jeans could be worn about three to four times before washing them. That depends on your usage, of course. If your jeans are worn at a workshop, you should probably wear them once or twice because they tend to get dirty easily.

And if you end up wearing jeans too many times, they might start to get weird smells of different kinds—from sweat to other things.
Jeans are tough clothing materials, but that does not give you the leverage to wash them rigorously or give them a tough machine wash.
No! This will only decrease the lifespan of the jean materials. A soft hand wash or machine wash is much preferable, as it will maintain the colour, texture and longevity of the material. After washing, they can be sundried or spinned, according to your preferences.
How do you get rid of the weird smell in jeans?
Now that you know what causes the weird smells that come from your jeans and you could not prevent them, how then do you get rid of them?
Apart from buying good quality jeans like Wrangler Authentics Men’s Classic 5-Pocket Cotton Jean if you had already fallen victim to buying low-quality jeans, there is a cleaning and laundry product I might be able to recommend.
You can get rid of the weird smell by using an appropriate washing routine that safely removes the weird smell without causing your black jeans to fade.
Set your washing machine to a cold water cycle and turn it on. The cold water will prevent fading. It is completely fine if you do not have a washing machine. It does not really matter.
You can get a laundry bowl or pail and do the basic handwashing. But, make sure the water is moderately cold and not ice cold. That would be totally uncomfortable, wouldn’t it?
Place the jeans into the wash along with a capful of laundry detergent (such as this WOOLITE® Dark 150 oz) designed for use with dark colours. Also add a half cup of baking soda, which helps deodorize the fabric. Avoid the use of excessive baking soda, and this is why there are different measurements for these home products.
Pour one cup of white vinegar into the washing machine at the start of the rinse cycle. Vinegar is another deodorizing agent that will get rid of the weird smell without harming the jeans. Vinegar is a popular product used all around the world for cleaning a number of items amongst other things.

Dry the jeans as you normally would. There would be no need of sticking with either spinning or sun-drying. You might do either of the two, it neither reduces nor increases the performance of your cleaning agents.
So, do you need to smell your jeans before purchasing them?
Absolutely not. You do not always perceive the smell immediately after they are bought, it gradually comes out depending on the number of times they are worn and washed.
For example, when you use an unorthodox dye on a piece of fabric, it does not stay permanently as the dye tends to wear off as you wash it.
Which laundry products can be of help to get rid of the weird smell?
There are amazing products like this WOOLITE® Dark 150 oz. This product will get rid of the weird smell off of your black jeans completely and they would never return, as long as you keep using the product, of course.
This product can be used for both hand wash and machine wash. They contain non-toxic chemicals that would be best for you and most especially, your black jeans.
Why should you spend a dime on a product that only does one job of getting rid of the weird smell from your jeans?
You should not, to be completely candid. This is why WOOLITE LAUNDRY DETERGENT is very affordable and highly recommended for you. It serves a number of other purposes aside from getting rid of those irritating odours that your black jeans emit.
Some of these are:
- Woolite Laundry Detergent can be used to wash other clothes apart from jeans.
- It can also be used for the general cleaning of toilets and bathtubs.
- The third use of this product is to do the dishes.
So you see, you will not only get rid of the smell, you will also save more money for a top-quality multipurpose product.
Do other jeans colours give weird smells like black jeans?
Jeans are jeans, and it does not really matter what kind of jeans it is or what colour it is. The above factors that are responsible for the weird smells emitted from black jeans apply to all kinds of jeans.
And also, when we talk about weird smells from jeans, as I have stated above, they do not specifically have to do with jean trousers or jean jackets and all, they have to do with all kinds of jean products. Whether blue, black or multicoloured jeans, the same initially stated factors apply.
Why Do My Black Jeans Smell Weird – Final Thoughts
I understand how frustrating it gets when your clothes, especially your favourite pair of jean trousers or jackets emit extremely unpleasant smells.
I have actually had some basic experiences of smelly outfits. And my solution was not very far-fetched. You do not have to go through these morbid experiences ever again once you are able to learn how to avoid them, and in most cases, control them.
